Description:

Up for sale is a preowned 2020 Epiphone Inspired by Gibson ES-335 in Cherry that has been extensively customized as an Alvin Lee “Big Red” / Woodstock tribute, complete with a hardshell case and strap. This is not a factory Alvin Lee signature model, the tribute work was performed after the guitar left Epiphone, but it is a seriously cool recreation of one of rock’s most recognizable ES-335s, with custom graphics, an added middle pickup, and modified electronics inspired directly by Lee’s famous guitar.

The underlying guitar is Epiphone’s Inspired by Gibson ES-335, featuring a layered maple semi-hollow body with a solid maple center block, set mahogany neck, laurel fingerboard, 24.72" scale length, 22 medium-jumbo frets, and the factory pair of Alnico humbuckers. Standard hardware includes a LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece. This guitar has then been heavily customized in the spirit of Alvin Lee’s Woodstock-era ES-335. Tribute graphics and decals were applied over the original Cherry finish and subsequently sealed beneath a gloss clear coat. The work was done well and makes for a striking guitar. The finish work is good, but not quite factory-perfect (probably a lot like Alvin's after he had the stickers lacquered over).

A Seymour Duncan pickup has also been installed between the original neck and bridge humbuckers, complete with custom cover modifications to more closely replicate the look of Lee’s modified ES-335. The middle pickup has its own dedicated volume control and is wired out of phase, just like the real Big Red. Lee himself described adding a middle pickup and separate control to his 335 and preferred the sharper response he got with that pickup wired out of phase. Combined with the graphics, the result captures much of the unconventional hot-rodded character that made “Big Red” instantly recognizable.

This example is best described as very good modified condition. The custom graphics and gloss clear coat present nicely overall but are not factory-level finish work, and normal small imperfections associated with the modification should be expected. There was also a minor finish crack on the bass side of the headstock. We professionally repaired and filled the affected area in our shop, and careful inspection found no movement or underlying structural damage associated with the crack. The guitar is structurally sound, plays properly, and is ready to be played!
