Description:
Up for sale is a preowned 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard Pre-Historic “Burst” Reissue, a standout example from Gibson’s highly regarded “good wood” era prior to the formal establishment of the Custom Shop. These late-’80s reissues are known for their materials and feel, and this one delivers classic Les Paul character with upgraded electronics and a well-played, broken-in vibe.
Features include a solid mahogany body with carved maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, and traditional Les Paul construction. The electronics have been upgraded with a set of Burstbucker Pro pickups, replacing the original pickups and bringing the instrument closer to a more vintage-inspired tonal profile. It retains the classic control layout with 2 volume, 2 tone controls, and a 3-way toggle, along with a Tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece.
The neck profile on this one is roughly a R0/1960 profile. Slimmer than the R8/R9.

This example shows normal playwear for its age, including surface scratches and small dings and impressions scattered throughout. There is one more concentrated area of buckle rash on the back of the body. The nitro finish on the back of the body and headstock is beginning to show checking, which is typical for an instrument of this era and adds to its vintage character. A little bit of haze in the nitro right around the forearm area of the body. Overall, it remains a well-maintained and great-playing example.
