Description:
Up for sale is a really cool guitar from the 1980s ... this is a Casio MG-510 MIDI-equipped guitar in red (the hardest to find color). These were made in Japan alongside Ibanez guitars, on contract for Casio. So the foundation of this retro-techy guitar is really solid. They play and sound great with the HSS pickups, 5-way blade, master volume, master tone, and coil-tap toggle switch for the bridge humbucker. Apparently this model was a favorite of singer/songwriter JJ Cale.
Of course, the big difference here is the onboard MIDI converter. It works very similar to the way modern Roland guitar synths work, with a pickup rail that senses pitch for each string individually, and then converts that pitch to a MIDI signal that can control synthesizers or other MIDI-capable equipment. The MIDI converter module has controls for blending in the magnetic pickups, MIDI volume, a tuner, and some options for the type of signals that are sent.
The guitar itself is in excellent shape, with just a few small marks here and there, and some light oxidization on the black metal parts. Very clean overall, and the frets, neck and playability are fantastic.
The MIDI module was extensively tested and it does work, but it is in need of service. It is finicky and intermittent. We tested it with an external 9V power supply because the battery pack for the 6 AA batteries is not included. You can plug in a regular 9V battery to the existing plug, but 9V batteries do not supply as much current as 6 AAs (even though the voltage is the same). We got the tuner working, switches all function as normal. But, the MIDI signal is intermittent and a bit hard to control. There is a good bit of info out there to service these modules, but the new owner will need to look into that if they are interested.
Tested 100% fully functional. Comes with a harshell case, trem arm, and the original manual. VG+ condition for its age. Frets are in great shape, and the truss rod works smoothly in each direction with plenty of room for adjustment.
As always, this guitar has been treated to a brand new set of strings and a deluxe setup here in the shop. That includes a full fret polish, setting neck relief / truss rod, dialing in nut slot height and string action, setting the pickup height and more! So, you can rest assured that it is playing its absolute best!
