EHX 15W Howitzer Amp Pedal

The Electro-Harmonix 15Watt Howitzer packs a complete guitar preamp and 15-watt Class D power amplifier into an enclosure small enough to fit on a pedalboard. Unlike an amp-simulation pedal designed to feed another amplifier or a direct recording setup, the Howitzer is an actual power amp capable of driving an 8–16Ω guitar speaker cabinet directly, making it useful for compact rigs, fly boards, rehearsal setups, or as a backup amplifier.

Volume and Gain work together much like the master and preamp gain controls of a conventional amplifier. Lower Gain settings provide cleaner sounds, while turning it up progressively drives the analog preamp into warm overdrive. Dedicated Bass, Mid, and Treble controls provide a full three-band EQ, and the Bright/Norm switch adds a subtle high-frequency and presence boost when a little more cut is needed.

The built-in effects loop places the Send and Return connections between the preamp and master Volume control. This makes it easy to run time-based effects such as delay and reverb after the Howitzer's gain and EQ stages instead of feeding them into the front of the amp. The Send jack also doubles as a Line Out carrying the Howitzer's preamp signal, while the Return can be used independently as a direct input to the 15-watt power-amp section, bypassing the onboard preamp and EQ.

At the speaker output, the Howitzer produces 15 watts into an 8Ω load and is designed for cabinets between 8Ω and 16Ω. EHX recommends an 8Ω cabinet for maximum output and a speaker power rating of at least 15 watts. Because this is a real power amplifier, its speaker output must only be connected to a compatible speaker cabinet—it should never be connected to the input of another amplifier, pedal, mixer, audio interface, or computer.
