Joseph Kuykendall is a multi-instrumentalist, performer, music educator, sideman and session player with over 10 years professional experience. Before beginning his professional career at 19 years old, he studied Classical Guitar and Jazz under Jason Rogers, a forward-thinking, highly respected teacher and player in Winston-Salem, NC, while actively augmenting those foundations with rigorous study and real-world experience in many other styles.
Joseph has played, written, and recorded music in dozens of genres and venues, ranging from Classical to traditional Western European & North American musics like Pre-War Blues, Ragtime, Celtic, Appalachian music and its successor, Bluegrass, to Jazz, Fusion, Funk, Country, Electric Blues, Rock & Roll of practically every variety, Hip-Hop, R&B, to church musics such as Praise & Worship, Urban Contemporary, Traditional and Southern Gospel, to world musics like Soukous and myriad Latin and South American styles, to the progressive, experimental and Avant-garde. He continues to expand his range and repertoire at every opportunity, so always inquire if interested in a specific idiom or style of music!
He enjoys working with students of all levels to develop strong technical, theoretical and listening skills, as well as a thorough knowledge of how everything, the music, the instrument and, importantly, the musician, works! He believes in teaching the detailed history and underlying mechanics of both the instruments themselves and the musics created with them, to foster a lasting understanding of the means of interaction between the musician and the music, namely how to extend one's self creatively via the instrument of choice.
